No Ponte protest (may 2024)

The No Ponte demonstration in Villa San Giovanni came to a close on May 18, 2024. Under the slogan “No to the Bridge of Lies”, various organizations and thousands of citizens came together to express their opposition to the construction of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina.

The reasons behind the protest are numerous, but among the main ones are the lack of infrastructure in the area and strong resistance to the expropriation of homes. Although the names of the affected property owners have been published, none of them have yet received any official notification.

“The fight is not over yet,” declared the spokespersons of the various groups, “we will continue to resist until our goals are achieved.”

The demonstration began around 10:00 a.m. in Piazza Valsesia, in the center of Villa San Giovanni, and ended along the seafront, in front of the Church of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo. There, several members of the committees concluded the march with their speeches.
