The Aeolian Islands are among the most fascinating in the Mediterranean. They belong to the Metropolitan City of Messina and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, but for millennia they have been a landing place for many Mediterranean cultures. They take their name from Aeolus, who settled on the islands and managed to obtain from Zeus the role of advisor to the gods and tamer of the winds.
